ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ellias O'Reilly, 20

Ellias O'Reilly (they/them) is a visual artist and aspiring graphic designer. Ever since they were a young child, Ellias has had a passion for all things artistic and a knack for creating. Growing up, they heavily pursued music while partaking in visual arts as merely a hobby. Now, transitioning into adulthood, they have decided to take those artistic skills built up over time and put them to use. Ellias decided that a career where they are able to utilize their own unique creations and designs would be a perfect fit. Through majoring in Graphic & Interactive Design at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture, they hope to improve upon current skills and learn the ins and outs of graphic design in order to become successful in the field.

ARTISTIC PROCESS

Most of Ellias' works start off with a traditionally hand drawn sketch on a sketch pad.The sketch may either be solely linework, or it may apply the use of color (usually with either colored pencils or markers). From there, the linework/sketch will usually be imported into an art application for the PC, such as Krita or Firealpaca. Ellias uses a foldable laptop and stylus to create artwork digitally. After isolating the lines from the background, the linework is edited and tweaked to be cleaner.Depending on if the work already included coloring, Ellias may either start from scratch with flat colors on a layer underneath the linework, or they may begin digitally painting over it to add additional shadows, highlights, and other details. Filters are also utilized at times in order to achieve certain effects.Photography is sometimes combined with drawing, mainly for use in backgrounds or to use as an asset for a work. After a photo is taken, it gets imported into the digital art application and carefully edited. Coloring, lighting, perspective, and fine details are changed to fit the rest of the work. After the work is finished being rendered, Ellias takes time and care to go back, clean up the work, and check for any errors that may have been made. Especially in the case of portrait drawings, this often includes flipping the canvas horizontally to be able to look at the work from a new perspective and seek out any glaring mistakes.Certain projects include text overlays. These most often get added through a mobile art application with several text options, such as ibisPaint X. Fonts and colors are carefully considered. Text outlines and drop shadows may also be added to make the text stand out more over the artwork.
